Ok, I played one of my friends in a couple games of 40K one day. He actually has 3 armies (cause he's a rich bastard). I have a small Tau army. The first game he played as his Imperial Guard and I utterly destroyed him but the next game he broke out his Tyranids. I took down probably 10 before they got to me and it was totally over. Especially because I only managed to wound his Hive Tyrant once. Does anyone have any tips on either what units to make an anti-Tyranid army or possibly some good tactics to use against them?
I had the same problem when i faced tyranids, lucky carnifex with 5+ cover saves, saves against 3 missle shots. A good trick is to take out any synapse creatures he has, hive tyrant for example, then his tyranids go all beserk and either run towards you or fall back. Really i dont know how tau work but whatever you do dont assault them, all i can say really.
Yeah, I definitely didn't assault them...I kept falling back as they advanced until I got to the edge of the map and couldn't go back anymore. Tau are terrible at close combat...although I haven't tried out any kroot yet.
Maybe try assaulting them with your kroot (you did get some, right?), and keep them busy. use the turns it takes them to destroy your kroot entirely to destroy their synapse creatures. And I think against tyranids, an ion cannon comes in handy as well.
Nope, I don't have any kroot...yet. I'm still working on the army. I really need to get some, but first I need to check my codex so I make the right decisions on what I need.
I think the two races that can beat them are Necrons and SM but problem is that with Necrons you need good tatics and with SM you need to stay back and try and stay away from close combat might be a good ider to set traps(If your playing a citys of death game) I only beat them once with my necrons and I was just lucky because my partical whip killed most of them off
I have like 8 Space Marines, a sergeant, and a landspeeder lol. It came with the starting package or something back when I didn't know what I was doing. So really the only "army" I have is the Tau. I have a little bit of Dark Eldar (also from the starting pack). But since I haven't put very much into the Tau, I think I might change to a different race as my main army. I just need to figure out which one cause there is so many I like.
use as many large area of effect weapons to take out the little fuckers, then use all small arms and missiles and such to take out the synaps creatures. and take out the big ones from strongest to weakest. and depending on what type of board you are playing on, set up some ambushes. and make sure you have a good plan just in case you get caught in close combat
No. don't do that. I agree with the area effect weapons, but take them out in order from fastest to slowest. otherwise, you will be killing creatures that will take ages to get into cc with you, while hordes of gaunts and rippers come and slice you to shreds.
tyrnids, in my opinion, are the only unbalanced TT race. All races can all be unbalanced if you put in effort to cheese out your army, but for nids, all you need to do is take a tyrant, a unit of genestealers and gaunts, than your have cheesy army.
I wont get into how broken they can be with the all gene stealer army or at high points in general. What nids have goinfor them is not only their basic troops (which are not bad at all) but verthing else. a nid player will usually have several different units (ie; carnifex, tyrant, stealers, zonatropes ) and the thing with their units is that if you dont manage to take one down than you are toast, your hole army with be destroyed by that one (or more usally) unit. once, i had a lone genestealer take out my defiler!
not only are these units close-combat monsters, but are usually next to impossible to take out with shooting (aside from gaunts and stealers).
Generally, when i play against nids in a 1500 point game, my oponent will usually have 2 zonatropes, 40 gaunts, 12 stealers, a tyrant, a carnifex, raveners, and a lictor.
oh, i forgot to mention, the nods are not only good at CC, they dominate at ranged combat as well.
So, in my about 12 games that ive played against the nids, ive won like 4 or 5 times out of sheer luck (which i hadly ever get) or intense tactics which work against any army and have no real advantage against nids.
It all comes down to, nids have no weakness, my advice is: shoot them to f*cking hell before they get to you.
