I'm looking at a Western Digital Raptor X that I can get a good deal on. It's a 150 GB 10,000 RPM, however I just noticed it's a 1.5 GB/S SATA drive. My question - which makes a bigger difference and in what way - the 10,000 RPM or the 3.0 GB/S?

Seems kinda obvious to me that the data transfer rate is the most important thing. Unless you have crappy access times, which is pretty unlikely.

A Raptor will perform better than a normal average SATA II drive. A Raptor can't shift data enough to saturate a SATA connection, and a normal drive certainly can't.

This is what I was reading somewhere else. They said a hard drive can't really utilize the full 1.5 GB/S let alone 3.0 GB/S. At current I have a 320 GB SATA II drive and an 80 GB ATA133 secondary. I was thinking of getting this 150 GB and installing Vista on it and using my 320 GB as the secondary drive. The Raptor is $100 which is why I'm considering it (Plus the guy is looking for an iPod Touch and I'm trying to sell one...).

Yeah, the fastest STR you'll get is around 125mb/s on high-end hard drives. For the most part, you'll probably see around 60-80mb/s on a regular hard drive. The 3gb/s figure is when every aspect of the file being accessed, hard drive, and everything in-between you and the hard drive is absolutely ideal, and only seen as a burst.

To be honest, my Seagate 7200.10 (7200 rpm) 320GB drive is nearly as fast as my 150GB Raptor is. It benchmarks within like 90-95% for avg read speed and is quieter. The Raptor kills it in seek time, but I can't say I notice a huge difference.

I like my Raptor, but unless it's dirt cheap, you may get close to the same performance out of a much larger 7200rpm drive. ;)

Thats rubbish, I've maxed the bandwidth of the connection many times, 3GBps is easy to reach. Transfer speeds are 10% of the total bandwidth, which is 300MBPS, 150 for SataI

Granted, you have to remove the HDD jumpers, and setup the BIOS to use SataII, Jumpers on the HDD you get SataI mode, Not setup in the BIOS you get Pata mode. Just make sure your OS can boot from sata mode. AHCI is ok for XP Still trying to find the right mode for vista lol

Btw, Oblivious, Your E8400, is that air cooled? on Stock coolers? I got mine to 3.6 last night and she zooms along, I'm getting an after market cooler in a week or so to make sure its nice and cool though

I threw an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro on it when I bought it a couple weeks back. That stock cooler is so tiny! It's half the size of the Conroe coolers.

I think my slow ram (stock 800mhz running at 934mhz) is holding me back right now (lol, like I can complain with 4+ GHz!). I got an E8400 with the new E0 stepping which is supposed to be even better for overclocking than the original C0's were as it runs cooler. The VID on mine was 1.10v, which is pretty decent (I hear they go as low as .85). Running 1.36v for 4.20ghz. *Hugs CPU* :)

Really? Even a Raptor will struggle to read or write at 120MB/sec, and practically you'll only get 80MB/sec sequential read and write. Modern 7,200rpm drives perform well so Raptors don't have such a massive speed advantage anymore, but they're still the fastest drives on the market unless you go into the territory of 15,000rpm SCSI or SAS drives such as the Seagate Cheetah.

Bearing that in mind, would you mind informing me how a drive that is realistically only capable of reading and writing data at 80MB/sec can saturate a SATA connection running at 150MB/sec, let alone a SATAII connection running at 300MB/sec? Even if you take overheads into account, SATA is more than fast enough to cope with any drive on the market.
