I am using a sb live! 24bit with 5.1 speakers, and I currently have my settings at 5.1 speakers, and cmss, nothing else changed, when I play gears of war, it doesn't sound like true 5.1, I can't hear things behind me exclusively on the rear speaker, etc. I don't see a setting in game to change to 5.1 surround, or anything, just adjusting volumes. Is there a way to make this work?

Its probably just a issue with Gears if thats the only game it happens with. Have you downloaded the latest patches/updates?

I thought CMSS was supposed to be to simulate 5.1 with headphones, but I could be wrong. Have you tried it without CMSS? I'm not really into Creative sound cards so I'm not up on all the fine points of their features. I have just a software driven M-Audio Revolution 5.1 sound card and get fine 5.1 audio in GoW with their Circle Surround mode.

You are correct with cmsss, it takes stereo formats and simulates 5.1 with headphones stereo speakers as well as 5.1 speakers. If I take off cmss, sound from the game only comes out of the front two speakers. So, it sounds like there is only 2 speaker support, I have the latest updates, is there a way to change it to 5.1?

I am also using vista and I hear some people have problems with 5.1.

I usually have to toy around with a few settings to get more than the two front speakers to play anything. You do have sound card that can support it, right? If so, it should have installed some sort of audio console into your control panel. Try toying around with the settings there; with my particular sound card, there are several options, from headphones, to 2.1, to 7.1, it may be set on 2.1 somewhere.
