A 9600GT I would say, guess it is faster, dunno about the price. Random Bench: 8800GT/512 SLI vrs 9600GT/512 SLI - PC Perspective Forums As it says here I would definitely go for the 9600 it is cheaper and almost as fast or faster than the 8800

The 8800GT would be the better performing card.

8800GT. The 9600GT is about as fast as a Radeon HD 3870 (the 3870 is slightly faster overall i think), both of which are not as fast as a 8800GT.

I have an EVGA 8800GT, and it's fantastic. I've never used a 9600GT, but I don't think I would want to.

The 8800GT for sure. To give you a round about idea, the 9600GT is the successor of the 8600GT. It has nearly half the stream processors of the 8800GT (64 vs 112) and one third fewer transistors on the chip (505m vs 754m).

I'd say neither :P I found the 8800GT to in the end, be sucky and not powerful enough, but it lasted me for...6 months *Well, will last for 6 months, till I get the 9900GT* And the 9600GT is just shocking. If you want cheap card, that performs mediocre, but is aimed at the high end market, get the 9800GTX... Its performance is not great improvement, and its price is piss poor *Heaps cheap* and yet is aimed at the high end market...Makes me sad :(
