Well, you're not the first person to ask this. The way I see it, most people would be tripped up by the fact that the 9400 is 512mb, and the 8600 is 256. The thing I usually pay attention to are the details of the card. While the 8600 is clocked slower, the shader count is much higher (doubled, I believe), which will probably net you better gaming performance. The 9000 series in general will show marginally better performance in terms of speed, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily better than an 8000 series card. I would say the 8600 would be the better buy here, but I could be wrong. I haven't had any first-hand experience with either card to know for sure. I would also highly suggest you look at the 9500GT. The 95 would probably get you better performance than the other two cards. Or, if you want to shell out a bit more, play it safe and get a 9600GT.

Stick that 8600 in there in place of the 9400.

I'm going to agree with the two guys above me, because I know nothing better, and they know what they are talking about. ;)

If they're both 512MB, then go with the 8600GT.

Agreed. Especially now with V-RAM being equal, the 8600 would be the better choice.
