I think it was about time I just built a new PC. I really want to play skyrim on a higher setting than low and I'm trying to spend less than $1000. also I know nothing about computers
I was just browsing through mastershroom's thread and picked up these parts.
intel core i5 3.3 GHz
Thats what I got so far and I plan on just using my old 9600gt.
is there anything I'm missing or any better/cheaper parts?

Sticking with the 9600 is a mistake if your looking to up the graphics on modern games. Have you bought the parts you listed or are you just looking for ideas atm ? I assume your from the US as you quoted $ ;) give it a day and let the wonderful people here sort out the best bang for buck rig.

just looking atm. A friend recommended that I just keep the 9600gt saying that it was fine for now.
ditch the 9600gt, it isn't very good at all anymore.
Might want to look for a 6950 or higher end 560ti
hmm, I'm liking the prices I find on the 550ti.

The 9600GT was a mid-range card when it came out like 5 years ago. By now it's barely a step above motherboard integrated graphics.
I'd get at least a 560 Ti. The 550 will run Skyrim ok, but not too much else without compromising settings. It would be a waste to get a good CPU like the 2500k and then pair it with a low-mid range GPU.
Depending on your timing, you might be able to snatch a 560 Ti at a very good price soon because rumor has it Nvidia will soon release a 448 Core version of the 560 built on the same chip the 570/580 use. Combine that with holiday pricing and the current 560s should be dropping to pretty good prices.
To build a whole new rig and retain the 9600 would be totally disregarding the meaning of whole new rig though. Many games now DO benefit from a good quad CPU, but the GPU still does most of the work.
Yeah, I saw some of the leaked shit for the new 448 core 560/570 just today. Weren't they supposed to be released sometime in December?
In either case, they're supposed to be priced very similar to the current 560 and 570.
Hadn't heard they're making a new 570, but if they do they'd better give it better VRMs for OCing and more than 448 cores, otherwise it will be kinda pointless with a 448 Core 560 coming out. AFAIK the 560 448 Core is supposed to be out before end of year, so probably Dec.
I've seen the 2.5GB 570 "Beast" with dual fan cooler on a shorter PCB, but no new higher core version. IMO a rear venting 580 if gotten at a good price is still the way to go.

I'll vouch for my 580; this thing is a tank. Triple-slot cooling sure doesn't hurt. =p
