I have been pondering for a while what would be the best video card for me.I've been lurking at the 6800 GT but I would like your guys opinions.

Current system: 2.0 Ghz P4 1.25 GB DRR300 RAM GeForce FX 5200

I have already been painfully pushed into the limits of my current video card, and I fear the worst when Unreal3 comes around. I'm overall not a too-notch quality demander, my preferred settings are

-1024x768 -Model,texture detail on high -Shadow detail off if the game lags, else on high -No AA (has always been ridicoulous in my eyes) -Trilinear filtering, higher if possible -30-40 FPS, also in high-action areas

I need a card that can sustain this level of quality for me during the new revolution of graphical engines (like Unreal 3)

Wich leads me to my question: What card should I get or what other upgrades should I get? I'll make a decision on price category after you've put open your suggestions.

Wait untill after christmas and get a 6800gt or an X800Xt(it is faster but lacks shader 3.0 support.

I have one a computer similar to yours except 1gb PC2700 and a 2.4ghz p4. Does a good job in everything except BF2:/

Get the ATI Radeon X850 XT or the ATI Radeon X850 PRO. ATI Radeon X850 PRO= $299.99 ATI Radeon X850 XT= $399.99 The PRO and XT have the same graphical features, the price difference is because the XT has a bunch of specialty ports in the back for TV's and stuff... they will also do a great job on the next gen games because they are two of the best video cards out there right now...

Talk to me about shader 3.0 support. I've always used nVidia cards, but I don't mind switching

Wait till after Unreal 3 comes out to see what video cards it will take. Don't buy nothing yet because we don't even no what cards will play the new ones on highest settings.

You are better off buying a new computer. Unreal 3 will likely be very CPU dependent like Unreal 2 is. Your 2.0ghz p4 is a 4 year old CPU that will bottleneck any decent vid card.

the fact of the x800 series lacking shader model 3.0 is completly, and utterly pointless. disagree with me all you want, but im a huge gamer, and iv only seen a max of 5 games that support this. it offer no performance gain. 98% of games still use shader model 1.1, and it looks jsut as good as 2.2, or 3.0. 3.0 dosent have allot of settings, or developed technology. its completly pointless at the moment. whats more important is the faster card. at the time, 850's are great cards that sound like in your price range. if you go to pricewatch.com you can find great cards uber cheap.

I would suggest a 6600 gt if you are on abudget but if you have money to spend i would get a 6800 gt because they are good solid cards even though shader 3.0 isnt being used it would be nice to have for future games. If you are a rich person with no limit on money get a 7800 gtx because well plainly put THEY ARE TEH PWN!!1!!!!!1:0wned:
