Well I can give you some ideas. The AMD Athlon processor line is divided into 3 main areas. The AMD Athlon 64, the AMD Athlon 64 X2, and the AMD Athlon FX line. The AMD Athlon 64 is your basic run of the mill processor designed to run basic apps and some video games. The Athlon 64 ranges from the Athlon 64 1500+ to the Athlon 64 4000+ (new ones may be out). For the AMD Athlon 64 processors you not gonna pay much for them. The price will most likely be in the low hundreds (100-300 dollars). The Athlon 64 comes in a socket 754, 939, and AM2 versions. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 is the dual core version of the Athlon 64. The Athlon 64 X2 ranges from the 3600+ to the 6000+. The speeds of the 64 X2 range from the low 2 GHz area to 3 GHz. Your gonna have to pay more for the 64 X2, most likely in the mid hundreds depending on the model. The Athlon 64 X2 comes in a socket 939 or AM2 versions. Now for the biggest bitch in town. The AMD Athlon 64 FX series. The Athlon 64 FX series processor is designed for gamers. Its multipliers on all of the models are unlocked which allows for easy OCing. The 64 FX comes in both a single and dual core design. Speeds rage from 2.5 GHz to over 3 GHz. But the high performace comes at a cost. The AMD Athlong 64 FX models can cost from 100-750 dollars depending on the model. The 64 FX comes in a socket 939, AM2, and F (1207 FX) versions. Choosing an AMD processor is basically determined buy what your gonna do and how much your willing to pay. But since your upgrading and you have a Compaq computer, I would recommend looking at an Athlon 64 or Athlon 64 X2. If your just doin basic apps and maby some games here and there a mid to high range Athlon 64. If you play video games and multi task the get a Athlon 64 X2. I hope this helps.

Well to be honest I dont know how to tell you what socket I am using. I am currently using a AMD Athlon(tm) 3200+ 2.20 GHz and it gets me by but I know an upgrade would do me wonders. How do I check what socket? Thank you very much for the info btw, that clarifies it a lot.

Well, sorry to burst your bubble. But the Compaq Presario is a notebook computer. You can't upgrade the processor unless you are, or know someone experienced enough to rip the guts out of it and instantly void the warranty.

That being said, I find it odd that you have an Athlon 3200+ because it's a desktop processor and strange it's in a notebook.

That being said, I had a notebook with a Pentium 4.

That being said, the bugger sure got toasty.

Edit - Silly me, turns out there is such thing as a Presario Desktop PC. In that case, you have a socket 939 processor.

this is the absolute best you can get for your socket 939. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2792677 It is an extremely high end gaming processor, plus dual core. It would serve you well for quite a few years, & it has a sweet price.

Yep. Like I said, you have a socket 939 Motherboard.

So anything Socket 939, will work. ;)

Ok well ive been looking on Ebay and I found "AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Dual Core CPU FX 60 939" will that work on XP? Some of them come with the windows vista OS. Also found the FX 55. How do those two compare? How will they work on XP?
