AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ and M2 socket - [Computer Hardware] Submitted by sendekyo on 9/27/2005 1:25:42 PM comments.gif1 Comment

Coming in the first half of next year, AMD will show the world their new M2 Socket, designed for the next line of X2 and FX CPUs. Details on one of the first CPUs for the socket are available, the Athlon64 X2 5000+, a 2667Mhz CPU running on a blistering 333Mhz FSB with dual 1MB L2 cache. Currently, AMD's best Socket 939 processors for their FX and X2 series are the FX57 and X2 4800+, respectively. The FX57 is equipped at 2800Mhz and 1MB L2 cache, while the X2 4800+ comes with 2400Mhz and dual 1MB L2 cache. The end of the road is still a long way off for the earlier A64 sockets, as the Sempron is not going to be available for the M2 (initially), and there is still room for clockspeed growth on Socket 939. Meh...I am not to excited about M2. Only major change will be DDR2, but unless AMD is magically planning to release a quad core Desktop cpu the extra bandwith will be a waste. Plus if the S754 ---> S939 like change happens again (When the only difference between the two is Dual channel support) it is very likely that M2 won't last long.

TLDR: M2 well not be much different then S939. You should only move if you have a DDR2 ram already avaiable to you.

How much longer will they continue to make 939 processors and chip sets for though? If they are not going to then just move m2 since dd2 ram is starting to win over ddr at extremly high speeds.

There not going to stop. They still make the old Socet A processor still. It be a while to they stop making socet 939 since 939 is still new.

1) AMD's current socket roadmap is extremely aggressive, suggesting the EOL for socket 939 by this time next year. AFAIK AMD hasn't produced a socket 462 part in quite some time.

2) @Hmmmdonut~ No quad core yet, but the idea is to lay the foundation to support one here. It's called planning.

3) @Pethegreat~ 1x2048k cache is preferable to 2x1024k for a multiple-core solution.

HA! now i can finally say HA!. iv been waiting almost a year to say that to people who went all estatic with socket 939. saying its all future proof. when the 4800+ is the last chip for it now. LOLLERSKATES. looks like i'll be upgrading to a m2. it always happenes, the m2 will end and they will have someting else. its typical technology growth, with planned obsolescence. people though 754 would stick around for a while, when it was shorter lived than socketA.
