I have been away from it for about four years now, and I know that things have changed in leaps and bounds since the last time I was familiar with it, so... anybody have a website that can give me a quick 101 course on what i need to know?

There is my Knowledge base Article. You can find the updated version below. http://forums.filefront.com/4120856-post1.html

As mentioned above, Ubuntu is the most popular flavor of Linux.

There are a few Linux users on here. Rookie uses Ubuntu, and I run Kubuntu. C38368, uses Fedora Core, and Sev, uses OpenSuse. Those are just the obvious ones.

Now as for what has changed. Gnome has added a feature sort of like "Spotlight". They call it the "Searchable Gnome Interface". KDE is working on adding spotlight functionality to their interface, with KDE4.

KDE4 is a complete rewrite of KDE's code, built to be portable. It uses back-ends that will integrate with the system. So for sound, it will use DirectSound on Windows, and Alsa/OSS on Linux. Etc... Unfortunately, KDE4 is new code, and its features are limited, but growing rapidly.

After that, there is this thing called Compiz-Fusion. Formerly known as Beryl,...

I like the following demonstration. But it just scratches the surface these days,...

I have recieved a copy of Ubuntu and have requested free copys of Kubuntu, edubuntu, and Ubuntu server. I can wait 4+ weeks for them to get here from The Netherlands as XP is ok for right now. As they are live CD's, I'm gonna try them out.

I've actually been using Ubuntu for the last year or so, though I did just inherit a laptop destined for Goodwill that's got RHEL 5 on it. Would help if I knew what the root pass was, though...

Anyway... I do!

The latest Ubuntu has Wubi, which means you can install a test version on Windows, as well as the more standard Live-CD.

This computer has been running Ubuntu since 6.06, and its now on 8.04.

Features | Ubuntu Desktop Edition

Yup linux has come a long way, i used to use Slackware all the time when i first got into linux now i find myself going with Ubuntu and other GUI style distros. I've played around with alot of distros, it's fun to see the different feels. I give a copy of ubuntu to my customers when i build them a computer just so they can SEE it, some have switched totally to linux.

I've been wanting to do that. Many people are wowed when I show off my desktop. Those that actually care about the appearance of the desktop anyway,...

My father and I tried loading Linux on some computers, for demostrations, etc... We just couldn't get them to sell.

Man,... That reminds me of this kid in my Office 2007 class. He claims he knows as much about computers as I do, however a simple "Win-R -> cmd /k -> alt-enter" blew his mind. I probably shouldn't be laughing, but this kid is trying to compete on my level... Its flattering, but its also funny.

Orowinn, you should try D.S.L. sometime, it is a great little Flash Drive Linux. Last I heard they were trying to keep it under 64mb. Anyway, it is less than 100mb, and has a web browser, word processor, etc... All the basics are covered.
