So it seems Apple is putting quite the markup on their little iphone.
Portelligent estimates that the cost of the materials used in the iPhone add up to about $200 for the 4-gigabyte version, which sells for $499 and about $220 for the 8-gigabyte version, which sells for $599. Their estimate doesn't include costs of final assembly, but it does give some insight into the gross margin on the device.

not at all, but a +150% markup in a retail product is insane for anything electronic. Usually you only see that sort of markup with accessories such as cables not actual items such as this.

Maybe, but i haven't seen anything else so far that does it with the same amount of style and good looks as the iPhone does.
I've seen them in action, and i have to say i'm impressed. They just plain look great in action.
I seen about the price on G4 yesterday, its not surprising. Almost every manufacturer of anything does that.
Keep in mind that that figure doesn't include marketing, shipping, or labor costs.
The largest bulk of cost in any industry is materials. I know from experience that the average labor cost in the automotive industry is around 6-7% of total accounts payable. I can't imagine that the electronics industry (especially if they are produced in the far east) were much different than that. Shipping would be a fraction of a percent.
