So let me paint you a word picture! T'was the day before today (So yesterday.. *cough*) and I recieved my pay slip for last weeks wage, with glee I thought, well now I have some excess and nothing to buy so what to buy.. of course after my previous issues (some of you may have suggested some cards and PSU's) I decided to go buy a new PSU and Graphics card.

So I bought a corsair ATX 650w or something along those lines, and an ATI Radeon HD 5670, this was mainly because I never play ridiculously demanding games, mostly MMO's but a lot of my favourite games are planning to release DX11 settings in the next month so it made sense to get a low end mid tier or whatever you want to call it DX11 card.

So with joy I skipped home (well more walked and jogged..) to install my new hardware. Everything went fine, it installed fine, it worked fine, I was pretty pleased with myself.

I had a few minor glitches in one game graphically, so I figured.. "I'll just update the drivers, I'm sure that'll fix it!" so I did.

At first everything seemed fine, the games ran smoothly, glitch free, and I was still pretty impressed that nothing had gone wrong.

Until this morning.

So I wake up, and do my usual routine which consists off Booting my PC up while I go make breakfast, then come back with my breakfast, watch a few youtube videos, then go about my day whether that be playing a game, going out or whatever.

But as I came back with my breakfast, the screen was grey. Nothing more, nothing less, just grey.

So I turned the PC off manually, then rebooted, then after about 30 seconds of seeing the desktop, the same happened again.

And again the third time.

So I went to my laptop, did a quick google search, found articles going back as far as January stating that it was linked to ATI's 5600/5700/5800 Graphics card range.

So on the fourth reboot I went into Safe Mode and did a system restore to two days ago (I couldn't remove the drivers as it wouldn't allow it in safe mode, and I only have 30 seconds of desktop time normally.) which got rid of the drivers and I reinstalled with the Stock drivers that came with the card.

Now that brings me to here.

I'm one of those who likes to keep everything up to date with my PC (aside from hardware) Drivers, program updates, whatever, so it irk's me a bit that I can't keep my Graphics Drivers up to date.

Basically, does anyone know a work around, or a fix? It seems a little weird to me that the earliest article I found was January '10 which is 8 months ago and it still hasn't been fixed?

Grey screen? I've only heard of things like that happening with omega drivers conflicting with currently installed drivers.

You may want to use driver sweeper first before installing the new drivers and see if that helps at all.

Contact the store and tell them your problem. They may refund or replace the card. Failing that contact the makers of the card. It could be a simple bios upgrade or they may be aware of a bad batch. After a quick google someone on the ATi forums had a similar issue and in the end RMA to get it replaced. You should be able to return it to the shop. The version number of the card might help as well if it is a A1 or series 1 card then they have all been updated by now and your card has some how slipped through the net.

You could wait for a newer set of drivers to be released, but honestly, with the glitches and the grey screen, I'd sooner try for a replacement.

I'm more curious as to whether or not you finished your breakfast.

Cheers for the responses, I'll have a look into it a bit more.

Admittedly I did leave it for a while when I got caught up with the grey screen issue. :p

With the AMD cards at the moment, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you kept the drivers up to date. A lot of 5000 card users are complaining about troubles with recent driver releases; I myself am on 10.5. But contact whoever you bought the card from, they should be able to sort something out for you.

What did you have for breakfast?
