I bought an ATI X800 with 512MB of onboard memmory over the past summer. I didn't feel comfortable spending $500 on a card so I sold it and got something cheaper.

I was talking to some Doom 3 fans on the internet and they were talking about how no card has ever come out with 512MB of onboard ram. I told them that the X800 has it and they looked on the net and said that it only had 256MB. I did a search on the internet and found that I could only find ones with 256MB for $400.

I was wondering what happend to the 512MB ones? I can't find it anywhere nomore, not even on the offical ATI site. I'm not thinking of buying one again but I'm just curious on what happend to them?

As far as I know, the X800's only have 256MB of memory. Did it say 512 on the box?? I don't think they've ever come out with a 512MB video card yet... :uhm:

I have encountered something similar. A geforce 4 with 256MBs. Do you happen to use a dual moniter confuguration?

There are cards with 512MB (or more!) of onboard RAM, but they're not meant for desktop/gaming usage. As yet, they're intended solely for high-end workstation stuff like vector gaphics, CAD/CAM and the like. They typically cost more than a whole desktop computer.

I'm sure that we'll one day have gaming cards with 512MB onboard memory, but there's no real incentive for manufacturers to make them yet... that much memory just isn't needed.

I don't think I did either....

I was looking through my gmail emails and I found the email for the order I placed over the summer and it said I ordered it and it was an ATI X800 Pro 256MB.

I feel dumb now...
