What is the average CPU temperature supposed to be ? just wondering because my CPU is idle at 48 c and goes up to like 57c whilst under load (like playing F.E.A.R. or Oblivion).
is that sort of temperature anything to worry about ?
Well it depends on alot of things. Mostly who makes it and what kind it is. Those temps are fine, a little on the high side, but you're not going to hurt anything.
What type of CPU are we talking about here?
its in his sig Rookie,
my Fx55 runs similar temps, dont worry as the maximum is likely to be almost 100 c. not too sure of the actual maximum , but it wont fry, just slow down or even shutdown if it overheats.
Thinking about it.
ahh...ok nothing to worry about then , thanks

Damn FireFox didn't load the images for some reason. I see it now.
That temperature is perfectly acceptable, it's when it starts going into the 60's and 70's that you should begin to worry. If you're concerned about it, you could always buy a new CPU cooler (such as a Zalman) or install some extra casefans. More cooling is never a bad thing.
I've got an ASUSTeK A7V8X motherboard with an AMD 2700+XP processor, and it generally runs idle in the low 50s, around 53-54 Celsius. When I'm running things like games that take more juice, it gets to around 63. I have my danger threshold set at 65, which is usually when it gets so hot, everything locks up. Overall, the thing runs a bit warm for my preferences, but my old cooling fan more or less exploded (I still have a char spot on my wall) and so I'm stuck with an ancient fan that more or less does nothing to lower heat. Your temperatures seem relatively safe.
If you look around the Internet, maybe download.com (I don't remember where I got mine) you should find a nifty program that allows you to set a particular temperature limit for your CPU that forces certain high-demand programs, i.e. games, to shut down when that certain temperature is breached. It's a pretty good way to avoid overheats if you have frequent problems with them, like me.
Mine idles at 35c and when I game it goes up to 40c.
You guys are a but confused. 90nm Revison E CPU's (FX57) do not like going above 60C. I don't know about you but, 57C is getting a bit to close. I would invest in some better cooling. A good aftermarket heatsink shouldn't have a problem cooling down that FX57.
Yeah I definitely need a better cooling system; this machine generally runs over 60 except when I'm not doing anything with it.
