This is one for all the UK visitors out there. BT (British Telecom) is going to trial 1 gb connections next year witha view to providing this to residential and business customers by 2015. The connection is 1 gb down and 400 mb up. No that is not a typo. 400mb up. with that kind of upload web servers would be a thing of the past with people hosting game and web servers on there home connection and they would be faster than most out there now.

BT Press Releases

With that connection what would you do with it ?

400MB is slow for a server still, considering it's a domestic connection too, it won't be steady enough for any serious work. Good for gamers though.

Broadband speeds in the UK are incredibly fractured. While we're not as fucked up as the US just because a company offers certain speeds in theory doesn't mean you get them in reality or in your area.

As for what I'd do with it.... Not a lot in all honesty. I've got a max download speed of about 700kbps at the moment (over a phoneline) and an upload speed of something like 30kbps. That's the best available in my area and I'm not in some incredibly impoverished city or anything.

Might be nice to be able to upload to youtube more quickly and download stuff from steam but other than that....

I love that I pay for 15/1 and get 20/3 (I'll verify the down speeds later). :D

Also, what would I do with all of that bandwidth? Even so, it'll be constricted on wireless, so it would be useless for wireless connection.

Unless you have two or three going at once, then it starts to get interesting. At least it will mean places that offer free WiFi will be quicker if they use it.

I pay for 12M down/1M up, and according to Speedtest I normally get around 5-7M down and 300-400k up. :(

They are using there 40 down and 10 up atm (infinty) which is fibre to a street cabinet then copper to the house and people usually get from 35 upwards and no lower than 8 up stream. This is going to use the same kit. Give it 4 years m8 and within that time the speeds will soar :)
