I'll be stumbling into some money soon, if circumstances turn out right, and I'll be using the opportunity to build a new, more decent gaming machine. I haven't kept up with newer hardware in months, so tell me if I'd be making an ass out of myself by buying any of the following parts. They're subject to change, and I might swap video cards, or go for more RAM, but here's a rough layout of what I'm looking for (except for the case, hard drive, and other, smaller peripherals):

Patriot Signature Series 1GB DDR400 (PC3200) RAM AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ CPU eVGA GeForce 7600GTS (GTS?) 256MB PCI Express x16 Video Card Foxconn Socket 939 NVIDIA NForce4 SLI ATX Motherboard

With everything else it comes to around $550, which is in the middle of my price range ($500-600) and seems, to me at least, to be a pretty decent setup. I don't need top of the line, and will be able to afford upgrades in about a year or so.

A quick question concerning the video card and processor. I'm buying from Newegg, and in the item descriptions they say "Vista Ready". Now, should I be assuming that the video card will be able to run DX10? It is a DX 9 card, obviously, but it's my understanding that Vista can only run in DX10. What's all this about?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, as always.

Thanks in advance.

I'd go for either OCZ or Corsair XMS RAM.

I don't think that card will do DX10. I'd also buy a slightly better card.

DX9 cards will function in Vista and allow you to use Aero as well as play older DX9 games, however they will not function with new DirectX 10 games...whenever they come out.

I was under the impression that DX9 cards would be able to play DX10 games (Such as Crysis), but just without the new DX10 features.

Sorry, my mistake - Yes you will be able to play them in DX9, but...that kind of defeats the purpose of buying a shiny new DX10 game, since you won't be able to experience the game as it was intended.

well then .. everyone who is building a system should stop right now and wait for the new vid cards to come out.

To the poster: Stay away from foxconn mother boards.

No, they should buy a mid-range card like a 7600 of 7300GT to tide them over for a year and then buy a good DX10 card when they've been out for a couple of months (to avoid the initial high prices, inevitable technical bugs etc).

I thought you were a consele fan boy  dude, no video card can do DX 10 thats out on the market at this moment. Beef, the 7600 GT is an aswome card becuase its the one I have! He can go for mabey a 7900 GS/GT for 50 dollars more or so. Just don't spend to much on a DX 9 video card becuase DX 10 is around is about to be released.
