Tilera Targets Intel, AMD With 100-core Processor - PC World

Kinda cool, though obviously not something meant for the average buyer.

I wouldn't expect this company to dent Intel or AMD's market share just yet, but this is a good read anyway. I'm interested to see how Tilera fares over the next few years.

But can it run Crysis?

edit incoming.

The Gx100 100-core chip will draw close to 55 watts of power at maximum performance, Agarwal said. The 16-core chip will draw as little as 5 watts of power.

Now that's something interesting. It will be interesting to see if this chip takes off.

The issue for most people is - it's not x86. So while it can probably find existance on some servers, it will not really dent the intel|amd markets in the lower class which is basically x86

Uh? I thought they said it's going to be x86?

Also, what motherboard(s) do they run on?

No, I don't believe it is x86. I did some more digging and found this from an InformationWeek article:

Tilera, however, has leapt ahead of the x86 architectures of the two larger companies. Intel plans to begin production of an eight-core Xeon chip, codenamed Nehalem-EX, by the end of the year, with systems using the technology expected early in 2010. AMD, which has a six-core processor, plans to release a 12-core chip in the first half of next year. Intel and AMD's, x86 architecture, however, is the industry standard in commodity servers found in most data centers today. It is unlikely that enterprises would immediately find it worth the cost to port business applications to a new architecture. Tilera, however, is hoping to make inroads in data centers over time, targeting specific applications.
