This kid I know, he reformats his computer every couple weeks. He fried his HD yesterday. He wanted to know why it fried... hell if I know? But, he did re-install Windows a lot, if you do it too many times can it fry your drive?
Re-installing Windows too many times will not "fry" your HDD. Neither will reformatting it. But reformatting alot of times can create bad sectors on your HDD and eventually make it so the HDD wont run stabally any more. But honestly, you would have to be formatting COMPLETELY every week for a good few months. I mean like a COMPLETE formatting process. You know, the one that takes hours? lol

a good reformat every 6-8 months is what i have been told, but not every few weeks
I bet he reformats so often so the FBI wont "discover" some things on his HD....
No, reformatting will not kill the HD -_-.
if that was his problem, he could encrypt files with say, 4096bit encryption, and use norton to wipe over with 0s any data he deleted, then put 4 firewalls on, 2 hardware, 2 software
Did you ask him why he reformats so much?, doing it that often is pointless, unless he's just really, really bored and needs something to do...
As everybody said, no, it will not fry the drive.
at one point, I was experimenting on an old computer with 98, and reformatted 1-2times a day, that is, se reformat+install, go to school, check if it worked, modify cd to work better, reformat, wake up...... It was fun but time consuming
Oh wow, and just what was the point of that experiment?
I reformat every 6 months. No, it won't hurt a thing.
Agreed, reformating wouldnt do damage to a hard drive.
Reformating basicly just marks the disk as being able to write over. Its a clean slat, but not like people think. Its like painting white over a canvas thats already been used.
Thats how the fbi and other agencys collect information that people think is gone. Its never really gone.
