I have a samsung sc-148A and its not reading any type of discs. I put a cd in and the light blinks but a mesage comes up saying theres no disc in the drive, my drivers are from 01 so maybe thats a issue i dont know, not sure where to download new drivers from. any ideas on why its not reading?

You could try updating your firmware, as you said, but usually these things are due to damaged discs or faulty/incorrectly installed hardware.

Open up your case and check to see if the drive is securely connected and there are no loose wires. If it looks okay and still won't read any discs, I'd say your drive is probably dead.

Just on the off-chance, I wonder if you've been playing any Sony music discs of late?

I'm pretty certian that the Sony Root Kit won't disable your drive.

It would be nice to know if this is a new problem with the drive, or if the drive has always had this problem.

I'm pretty certian that the Sony Root Kit won't disable your drive.

It purportedly does if the DRM software is removed...

"[[url=http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.htmlMark Russinovich[/url]]"]When I logged in again I discovered that the CD drive was missing from Explorer. Deleting the drivers had disabled the CD.

However, given what you say Luke, it's unlikely to be the problem ;) Especially if the CD drive is visible in My Computer.
