I know some of us like a custom look for our desktop. There are some programs like "Windowblinds" that work, but only "skin over" the existing theme and use a lot of resources.

Well, I found a way that uses the existing Windows theme system and makes XP have the ability to be customized! Best thing about it! It's free

Go to >>HERE<< and download the patch. Go to your Control panel and set theme to Windows XP. Unzip the patch anywhere and run it. This program will change a .dll that is file protected, so when prompted to insert XP CD, cancel it and ignore warnings. You will then be prompted to reboot your computer. Wait the full minute as asked and click to reboot.

Now you are set to go to >>DEVIANT ART<<

Download your favorite visual styles, unzip anywhere, but make sure you paste the visual style to c/Windows/Resources for them to work. Some of the .zip or .rar files will do it for you. When you go into the Resources file, you can double-click any one of your styles and BLAMO!

If you have trouble with the install, please read THIS

That all sounded good JM until I realized you provided for install problem fixes but no reverse procedure reinstating the original uxtheme.dll file Windows uses if you want to revert back. Thus, it's probably best to back up that file in case you can't find the stock version of it or sfc /scannow and/or Disk Management's Error-checking feature doesn't successfully replace it after deleting the patched one.;)

There really is no need to backup the file unless you really want to. I have done this on all 3 of my computers and also on about 5 other computers. The replaced .dll will still work with the old XP Themes.

That is also why I posted the link if anyone has trouble with the install.

I was hoping when you said customizable it would be scalable like WMP. It'd be cool if you could even use a program like Serif DrawPlus4 in conjunction with it to make you own custom skins using your owncolors and textures. Do you have a good source for some screenshots of some of the better premade ones though?

To unistall it, just run the patch again. It removes the patch & restores to original state.

I've been using this program for a few years now. I like it. Makes my desktop uncluttered and simplistic. And I love ObjectDock.

Here's what mine looks like:
