So Christmas is coming up and as one who celebrates it I'll have some spending money. Along with this and what I've been saving up, I'll be reaching about 1 grand. I think I have a pretty nice setup right now but as you guys know, the games get harder to play at max settings (which is what like). This is what I have right now:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061 System Model: RF243AA-ABA M7640n BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.6GHz Memory: 2046MB RAM Page File: 996MB used, 2942MB available Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode Sapphire Radeon x1950 pro 512mb

Besides these specs, I would like to get a wireless mouse and keyboard. My PC often overheats as well because I have a compact tower with no extra cooling devices so maybe this would be a good idea. So my question is what would be good upgrades that have the best bang for the buck. THANKS

OMFG!!! Where am I?!?

You might want to get a new video card, or possibly a new processor, but the 5000+ is pretty solid.

Revenge was here.

The CPU is ok, you should get 8800GT or HD3870 and G7 mouse with G11 keyboard

Bet On better graphic car, thats the onliest that matters in the future, and if you have (or ever get) enough for a Nvidia Nforce with a 8600 gts/gtx Sli, then you will be running for 15 years or so without thinking buying a new graphic card.

I would die without GF

If it's overheating now then get a new case before changing anything.
