Are you talking about Window's cmd.exe? As in goto Start -> Run -> Type cmd and press enter?

If so, this is text based "Window" that lets old timers like myself feel like they still have some control over the OS and is reminiscent of the good old days of DOS, Linux and Unix.

Mainly these days you use it to run and interact with applications that do not have a GUI interface. For example, alot of low-level applications, like debugging, just spool out lines of text, don't want the overhead of having to develop a whole displaying mechanism to show this text, so they can only be run from the Command prompt.

It's also useful to access applications that exist in windows but which you would have to search for via Windows Explorer to find.

Try some of these apps to give you an idea.
