Yesterday my computer randomly started acting up, I did nothing out of the ordinary to make it want to kill itself, going really slow, programs stop responding for a few minutes, things like that. It took me 3 minutes for filefront forums to load. If I click on someones name in MSN, the program will freeze for a good 10 seconds, along with every other program. Sometimes things work fine though, I created a new tab and went to Facebook, loaded fine - when I click on my profile it took over a minute to load. None of my programs are actually crashing though, they stop responding for a few seconds and then work for a few seconds, Google chrome claims to stop responding but still works fine. Press pause in iTunes and it freezes. Type something in the search bar in computer, and it freezes. I've checked my CPU performance and my memory, and they aren't even close to being overworked.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium Video Card: Nvidia GTX 285 Memory: 4096 GB Ram CPU: Intel Quad Core Q9550 2.83GHz

Could be malware or perhaps some broken software. Try closing all processes in task manager that you don't need and checking the PC with virus and malware scanners.

If you hear unusual noises coming from your HDD it may be time to backup important files and check it with a tool provided by the manufacturer. If you still didn't find anything you can check your RAM with memtest and maybe defrag your HDD for good measure.

I closed most of the processes running, the problem has stopped. Now I just need to figure out which one it was. Thanks for the help.

No problem. If it turns out that the process has an usual name you might want to upload the corresponding file to virustotal.

Hmmm... I had this problem a while ago. Next time that happens, keep task manager open and watch your CPU usage. If it's the same as mine, it'll be a process called MsMpEng.exe. It's part of Windows Defender.

Of course, it could be anything, that's just what my laptop used to do. Never found a fix for it, other than uninstalling the damn thing.
