So the other day I wander over to my computer to find it turned off. Weird, since I keep it running all the time. I start it back up, log in, and it freezes. I restart it, and it still freezes shortly after logging in. I start it up in safe mode, works perfectly. I mess around with the services launched upon startup, and nothing seems to help. Couple days later, I completely uninstall my antivirus, and it suddenly works perfectly.

I'm not entirely sure why disabling the anti-virus's services didn't solve the problem, and at this point I really don't care. What I am concerned about, however, is an unprotected computer.

tl;dr I need a new anti-virus program. Preferably a free one, as I am pretty broke at the moment. Definitely one that doesn't suck.

Microsoft Security Essentials has actually been serving me pretty well.

Avast! (Free edition) is the best in my opinion.

I agree with Doc that Avast is still the best free AV.

Avast is completely freeware. You can update it time to time on internet. You can also use AVG free for one month. It is the best way to use it to remove viruses and then uninstall it if needed. Thanks,
