I'm installing from a clean DVD to a 80GB NTFS EIDE Drive, on a decent specs system..

It keeps throwing up CRC errors upon install... anyone got ideas why?

Most likely a problem with the disc you're using so try burning another one, if not it could be a problem with one of the drives.

Probably something wrong with the disk. If you ordered it from Canonical, order another one or download the iso from the website and burn it to one of your own disks. If you downloaded it, then it may have screwed up in burning, or the download was corrupted by something; download it again, and burn it on the slowest speed possible.

Cyclic redundancy check - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In other words: either the DVD is bad, or the HDD has too many bad sectors for it to compensate.

Saw that so burned a new disk. Now it installed up to 27% and then froze, meaning I HAVE to reformat the drive again otherwise it doesn't recognise it as a drive.

Speaking of Ubuntu; can anyone tell me how to get the proper ATi drivers for it?

Try this, since I've always had good luck with it: Ubuntu - cchtml.com
