Nemmerle;3847300I'd imagine this is because cards are now required to support all the functions of a given DX release rather than being queried by the rest of the computer all the time. Either way I don't see programmers developing for 10.1 for quite a while, there are hardly any games that require DX10 since so few people see it as needed or supported. The hardware just isn't there and probably won't be for a long time to make programming for 10.1 a good idea. Should see a price dip in the cards out at the moment though.
yeah, hardware manufactors are forced to comply with that, however software makers aren't. At least we know (at least good business sense will suggest) that they will have backward compatibility until things even out with Directx.
I honestly doubt anyone would want to update every incremental patch they make. Just imagine if 10.1 has a fatal flaw and is fixed in 10.2, but then anything made just for 10.1 will be useless.

ohh man .. i am soo happy i waited then.
Remember when you told me my sli system was outdated now ( and really of no real use) n0e ? This is the crap i was talking about right here.
10.0 was a bust and now their update, needs a hardware update ... game makers will have a field day with this.
oh joy.. I eagerly await the game delay reports as they update the software to be compatible with both dx10 and 10.1

And Crysis will ship in 2008... :( This really sucks, because it means that the DX10 card in my laptop that I'm getting will be useless!

Not necessarily...Crysis ship date is set November. And I'm sure it will be atleast another year or 2 before games will start to use DX10.1. Game have bearly touched the surface of DX10. This does seem incredibly crappy though to those people who spent good money on Geforce 8 or Radeon HD cards....I myself was planning to get a 8800GTS...but now i'm having second thoughts..

yes... they have barely touched the surface and now they can't even scratch it. Why in the world buy a dx10 card when dx 10.1 makes it outdated ? You don't.... You wait out the bs till the end.
I will stick with my sli system for a few more months. The 8800's will not be dropping in prices, but careening down a path of uncontrollable speed to the base of hades it seems.

No, not really, it just means that your card won't support the features implemented into dx10 after version 10.0. Hardly useless, but still not quite what you had in mind.
If you paid a premium for DX10 hardware so you could be "future-proof", that odd sensation your feeling on your backside is M$ giving you the shaft.
I know alot of people would have waited to buy had they known this, and none of the companies involved went out of their way to make people aware of it (which doesn't surprise me).
Some folks should/could care less though since they buy a new video card every year or so. If you fall under that category, you needent worry about such trivial details; move along, go back to your gaming.
[cheesy teasing voice in use] Wellll I know that dx9 didn't have this issue. Funny how they messed all this up now... with cards being soo expensive and all.... seems to me they did it on purpose. [/tease voice]

DX10.1 likely won't prevent you from playing games on current DX10.0 hardware (backwards compatible), you just won't have the ability to do whatever features they implement into DX after that; Features you may not even notice you're missing; Features we may not see in a game for years to come anyways.
The release date for DX10.1 is whenever they release Vista SP1, which is rumored to be in October/November.
