I am having problems with getting programs that are demanding on the graphics card to start (games.) Far Cry 2 just jams the computer, other games don't start at all, but CoD tells me that I have a directX problem. I have an 8600GT (I tried updating drivers, didn't work) and DX9.0c. When I run a dxdiag and test 3D Acceleration, I get an error that says "Test failed at step 6(No hardware supported display modes found): HRESULT = 0X80004005 (Generic failure)" Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?
I'm not really a tech guy but I'm just gonna contribute my 2 cents. Perhaps this is because your GPU disconnected somehow. I know I tried to play DMC 4 recently and later I discovered that my GPU had disconnected. I was having the same problems as you with anything graphically intensive except even my screen resolution was affected as well and switched to 640x480 mode, automatically. Switching it to 1280x1024 slowed things down. Some diagnostic somewhere said it was because too many resources were being used and, therefore, my GPU had to be disconnected. Maybe yours did the same when you tried to play said games and maybe that's why it says "no hardware supported display modes". Try checking in add hardware in the control panel to see if there are any connected devices but ones that aren't being detected. You'll notice them in the list if they have a red cross on the icon. Anyhow, that's my guess. Please no bashing. Just trying to help.
Nope, that's not the problem, the card is connected and add hardware says it is working properly. Thanks for attempted help though.
Sorry for double post, but I have an update on the problem. It is not a directx or a GPU problem, it is a monitor problem. For some reason, games run fine on my older monitor (Dell 17") but they do not run on my Acer 22". When I try to run them of the 22", it says that there was an unrecoverable graphics error or a directx error. Should I take the monitor back to the store and request a replacement?
