Okay I know that higher is better, like more flexible and all that good stuff but what can DX9 do better than 8, and what can 10 do better than 9? And what's with all the hype with 10? Are there DXT10 level cards out? Is the ATI X1800 one of them? [I have a DXT9 level card.]

8 is what games like Bf1942 and Command an Conquer generals use. That is the level of detail you get from Dx 8.

DX9 is what games like doom 3, halo, HL2 and BF2 run on. The latest version is 9.0c which utlizes shader model 3.0

Dx10 may be on windows vita, but I don't know since there are no cards avable for it.

There won't be a DirectX 10 as such. It will instead be part of Vista's 3D engine, with a completely different name.

Yeah, Microsoft don't believe that DirectX shows that they are the sole developers behind it, and want to claim more applause by calling it 'Vista Graphic Library' or something.

DirectX is a great name, but I guess they want everyone to know they made it.

OpenGL is open-source, and was created by SGI. Link.

Not really. Open source is in more places than you would think. Take Linux for example - it's been estimated that twenty-nine million people worldwide use it.

the x1800 wil not support dx10. cards that will support will be released after dx10 is released. diffrent direct x generations improve the following.

performance eye candy quality detail better engine structures and archetectures

more advanced bump mapping (dependant on engine, should see better with dx10)

polygon count (dependant on engine, we should see more with dx10 engines)

AA features AF features as well

all of which will be improved and worked on. performance will be a big issue.
