I've been reading a lot of these lately. They're stories from members of download.com about their encounters with some tough spyware.

Here's the link to the most recent story: http://www.download.com/Spyware-Center/1200-2023_4-5154912.html?tag=sptlt\

I find them to be pretty interesting reads. Just how ignoraint some people are, and how people who "claim" to be savy PC users, are infested with spyware. It's a little unsettleing.

A great example of ignorance comes here: http://www.download.com/1200-2023-5150260.html

It's probably also my favorite story. The guy narrating it faces a real dilema about how he is supposed to tell the users of the PC he just fixed that the internet is a dangerous place. I'm just amazed that some people just "can't get it."

I had a friend who said that she was so sick of Windows. She went through three PCs before getting a Mac, witch she hasn't had a problem with, ever. People just need to realize that Window's PCs need attention and care. They need anti-spyware and anti virus programs. Not to mention a firewall.

What do you guys think about these "horror stories" and damned ignoraint people who don't think they need to do anything to protect their computers?

Yeah, people are a little ignorant with these issues... They complain about all this crap on their PC...But are so oblivious to the fact that the Music and Porn Sites they have been to...are the main culprits.

But after a while, my brother began toying around with LimeWire. I had strongly advised him against this, saying it would be the downfall of the computer, [B]but he blew me off

Mwahahahaha  Sorry, just had to.

Isn't it great how they provide the link right in the text of the article? (I mean that satirically)

Oh yeah, these are very interesting to read. I remember a few years ago, when I didn't know what spy/ad-ware was. Our computer used to crash about once every 1/2 months. Now I know better, and haven't had a crash in over a year!

A month or two ago my sister complained of her laptop spontaneously rebooting and locking up. So I downloaded Ad-aware and ran it.

568 Spyware programs detected!

I was amazed it didn't catch fire and melt while she was using it. So luckly the computer didn't lock up while Ad-Aware was scanning and it deleted them nicely. It turns out she had downloaded several albums on Kazaa and a few free games from random websites. The sad thing is, she still downloads carelessly and expects me to fix her computer every week.

People have had over a thousand for a first-time scan. Remember that it's not just programs, but tracking cookies and other non-harmful bits of information.

Tracking cookies are just cookies laid down by sites to see where you go on their site. Pretty harmless most of the time, and you get dozens of them on a normal internet surf.

Quite ironic seeing as Download.com is one of the prime distributors of Spyware-infected programs. :p

My mother has this damn annoying habbit of thinking that if you don't find something within the first 10 minutes of looking for something on the internet, that it's an excuse to start screaming at it & everyone around it whilst insisting that "£3000 worth of computer is utter fucking shit".

Now THAT'S annoying as hell.
