Are certain DVD drives better for gaming than others?, or does it not really matter that much?

How about this one?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=27-106-966&depa=1

I just want to make sure when I buy something I dont later regret it, I want to get a DVD drive mainly for gaming, but still be able to burn DVDs if I want.

Why would the CD/DVD drive matter in gaming? I have an outdated 32x Samsung CD drive, that although it lacks burning capabilities is perfectly good for anything it should be compatible with. Their burning/reading speeds and quality differ slightly, but if it's mainly for gaming that shouldn't matter.

all the CD/DVD drive is for is for installing, and reading a specific file from the disc so it knows the game has been bought and that you have the real game getting a faster CD/DVD drive would probebly speed up installing the game, depending on the speed of the disc, and maybe reading the game when it starts. Although i highly doubt that you would notice a speed change there. Unless you had the whole game or directory on the disc, there would be no differance while playing. This is why on PCs games are stored on the hard drive, so its quicker and easyer to read.

80% of the DVD-Drives on the market at a good store today are 16x. This is fine for gaming and watching DVDs, playing CDs ect. You need a CD-RW to burn CDs and a DVD-RW drive to burn DVDs though.

Considering that DVDs (movies) and CDs (audio variety) are played back at 1x, 16x/52x is beyond overkill. Where speeds really come to matter is when copying from (higher read speeds are better, to the point that you exceed the destination drive's write ability, ripping from, or writing to. Don't expect to get anything in the way of faster gaming out of a drive that exceeds the title's minimum specs. As an aside, some drives will do some tasks faster than others (even if they're rated at the same speeds), but I for one think that you'd have to be pretty desperate (and way too rich) to care.

I know that a drive doesn't speed up gameplay, it was just a small concern after reading one of the customer reviews for the DVD drive in the link I gave.

This is what it said:

I had it for about 4 months now .bad for loading in games and software .it will skip files, so you may think your computer was messed up.Iam giving it 3 stars because the one i got was bad maybe some else had better luck with it

Honestly, for every one quality, informative and well-thought review on Newegg, there are a dozen that are either "THIS xxxx RoX0rRz!!!11!1 its duhbest!!1" crap or some pissed-off hack who just wants to whine because he didn't do his homework or something equally useless. I have never had an issue with a Lite-On drive, and that is all that I use. Moreover, I've never spoken to anyone who has had a problem with them. $5 says that his problem isn't the result of a problem with the drive.
