Okay, I recently bought a new SATA Samsung DVD-RW drive off Newegg. When I put in a DVD game it worked fine but when I put a DVD movie in and try and open it with Windows Media Player 11 it just says "This program has encountered an error and must close". I have a DVD codec installed already, it's packaged with this Cyberlink PowerCinema player and I've used it on other computers in the past and it always worked. I thought it might just be WMP so I tried Real player - same thing it crashes identically when I try to tell it to play the DVD. I tried the PowerCinema player - same as the other two. I've tried different discs and it still crashes. I'm at a loss as to what is wrong here, every other kind of disc works fine it's just when I try to play DVDs that it crashes. Any ideas whats wrong with it?

Hello ^^ Did you define your zone in the DVD player's settings ?

When I click the DVD tab under Windows Media Player it gives me that same "Program has crashed" message. I haven't set the zone but I never had to before.

IIRC the zone is stored on-chip in the drive's firmware, so it might be worth checking that it's set to the correct zone anyway - look in Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM Drives and then double-click the device representing your DVD drive. The properties screen will give you the option to change your region. You can do this four times before you're locked out.

I admit I've never heard of an incorrect region setting affecting WMP or other media players this badly, but it can't hurt to look.

It wasn't set so I did that but it's still crashing the same. This is extremely aggravating...

Neither did I, until it somehow happened to me :p However since that didn't seem to fix it, I'd ask for more info : - did you try several video dvds on that drive ? - if not, did you try that one on another drive ?

Edit : OK, you already answered my questions in your first post, sorry ^^' Well I'd say there's got to be something faulty in that drive, probably with some chip dedicated to decoding the data according to which region is set, or something like that ;(

Terribly odd though, how could it read any DVD then? That still doesn't explain why the DVD tab under Windows Media Player locks up. You can access that menu without a DVD even being in there and it's irrelevant to what disc is in the drive.

Well that's precisely why I think the faulty thing is a specific component dedicated to managing how the drive reacts according to which zone is set and what video DVD is inside... That or it might be a software issue with the system itself, but seems less probable to me (however you might check by booting on some livecd ^^ )

By the way, if you didn't try it yet, maybe look for a firmware update ?
