Mine's been doing that too on my E drive, but I can still change things. I have no clue what's going on either. Are you running XP Home?

Mine does that too, it's very strange. I'm using XP Home. I've given up trying to find out what it wrong because it doesn't seem to bother anything.

First thought that came into my mind was that you don't have administrative privileges; if your account is secondary on the computer that you are using it will not necessarily have administrative rights.

My account is admin, and it still does it.

Surprised Im not the only one that noticed this.

Im on Windows XP Professional SP2 with all the latest updates

And I have administrative rights on the computer. In fact, I control it. no one in the house knows more about this computer than me. but, i have no idea why my files and folders are going "read only"

It's normal for a certain amount of stuff to be read-only - XP always write-protects vital OS files and folders. Is this the problem, or are all your files and folders write protected?

For me EVERYTHING comes up as read-only according to the properties box, but I can open and edit things as normal.

It's odd.

This can be caused by a System File in the folder being "Read Only". Such as the "desktop.ini" file, or one of several other folder setting files.

If you have changed the folder view settings, such as adding wallpaper to the folders, then that could be the problem.

WARNING! The following link contains advanced techniques, which if done improperly can severely damage your Windows XP installation. Possibly rendering it completely unbootable.
