Hi, I have a question about external hard drives. I am thinking about getting an external hard drive to put all of my games on and I was wondering games would perform on an external hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Normally, you won't want to do that, unless you don't plan on detaching it from the computer, because lets say you detach it, then attach a different device at some point. The computer will then assign the new device the drive's old letter name, then if you reattach the drive, it will have a different letter, and it probably will not be able to run your games correctly. My suggestion would be (if you know how to take apart a computer) to buy an internal hard drive (cheaper, and a better solution for games) and use that inside, rather than an external.
well the reason i was thinking of getting an external hard drive is because i am getting a laptop and i wont be able to put an extra internal hard drive in it. also if i do detach it is there a way i would be able to get the same drive letter?
I think if you don't add any storage devices from the time you disconnect it to when you reconnect it, it should be fine. What size hard drive is in the laptop now?
it comes with a 60 gig hard drive. if you need any other infor about the laptop let me know.
I built an external hd with an 80g western digital ide drive & an i-omega drive case. It uses the usb to connect. I use it for all my music & photos. When ever I reformat, I just reassign the same drive letter(K). If you attach any other drives, for whatever reason, just asign it a different letter than your external hd.
so for the most part this will work for games? i figure that they might run alittle slower since they would have to access info from the external drive.
I have all my valve games on my external drive. I play DoD source from time to time & I haven't noticed any slow down. The rest of my games are on an internal sata drive.
depending on the speed of the drive you get they might be faster, and probably will be faster
