Hi guys,

wonder if you could help me out here. I just built my new pc and stuck the harddrive from my old pc into an external case.

I have another harddrive in an external case which shows up just fine, however the one I extracted from my old PC doesn't show up. When I switch it on the system will play the "device connected" sound and the balloon tip shows the model of the harddrive as well as the "your hardware is set up and ready for use", but it just does not show up.

I have installed all the drivers for my mainboard that I can think of.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked Disk Management (go to Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management)? If you can see your external drive in disk management, then you probably have a partition problem. If this is the case, remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it to your PC via IDE or SATA to retrieve your data. Then delete the partition and reformat. Put it back in the enclosure and your problem should be solved!

Might also just be a drive letter conflict, as it often happens with USB keys and network drives at my workplace...

Pull the old HD and see if it is jumpered for cable select.

Most of the external enclosures we use at work want the HD on cable select or single drive only.

Thanks guys, it was something in the disk management. Apparently I had to convert the drive from a foreign to a native setting, it keeps disappearing at every reboot though. I chucked the entire content on to my 500GB drive and will now reformat.

Thanks again for the tips!

No problem. I have run into similar problems at work before. Not to mention it's the least we can do for a forum admin! *removes lips from LW's butt*
