I think fat 16 has a size limit of like 8 gigs or so. But should win 98 run on a fat 32?

I have a friend just as stubborn. He just spent almost $2,000 on the best hardware out there. Top notch Phenom II quad-core, 6GB of RAM, dual GTX260's in SLI...

And he buys fucking Windows XP Home 32-bit. He even knows about 32-bit vs. 64-bit and how he won't get more than 3.5 GB of RAM out of it, but he insists it'll work better because 64-bit is unstable and chock full of driver errors. He doesn't want either version of Vista, and his explanation is that "it's basically a virus. Why would I pay more money for something that uses way more memory? It would just weigh my system down, you're retarded."

As far as I'm concerned, he can enjoy having half of his RAM doing fuck all, and never having DirectX 10. Then again, he mostly uses this thing to play Counter-Strike 1.6 and Quake II.

FAT 16 limitation is 2 GB. But Windows 98 does handle FAT32. However, Windows 98 might crash if you try to run it with 512 MB RAM or more You'll probably need some patch to allow it to work without problems, such as Xeno86's modified vcache.vxd (can be found here but it's a french site... you probably can find it in english somewhere ).

As for the problem formating the drive, well, might be due to a chipset / BIOS limitation... does the BIOS recognize the whole 40 GB ?

i've already got the service pack 2.1a? that has every update since win 98 was released, even the 512MB ram fix, so im ok.. the bios can read 100 500Gb keep in mind this is a Pentium 4 not an 11 yr old bios lol... i have a 8Gb drive i tested.... but still that hang at 24:% maybe bcz im installing it while 512mb ram is in ? shall i remove it while it's installing??? so 256mb should be ok ? x-M-x

Hmm... try formating with some other tool than FDISK maybe ? There are lots of good freeware ones.

If all else fails, you can remove the hard drive, attach it to a computer with an operating system, and format it through there, and reattach it to the original computer.

Heh ? As far as I know, FDISK is a DOS utility to create partitions, that doesn't format them... even though you might have a DOS embedded into a ROM (seems pretty unlikely to me though, for a motherboard that supports Pentium 4... as previously stated, it's not SO old).

However, if the disk has no system, that shouldn't prevent you from booting from a floppy or a CD.

BTW, may I ask why you definitely want FAT 16 ?

Also, on an off-topic note, why do you always write in red ? :/

Quake II, with that system? Baaahahaha! You said this guy was your friend, so I don't want to be too blunt, but what an idiot. "Vista is a virus, it uses lots of RAM!!1" n00b!

Vista with 6GB will work far better than XP with 1.5GB (yeah, he'll be left with about that much after SLI 260's take what then want).
