Hey one of my friends just got a new MB about 2 months ago for his X800Pro, and after a reinstall the other day the integrated FireWire became active and is listed in his Network Connections.

Does this mean you can link 2 PCs via firewire cable to use as a traditional network, and have transfers at 400mbit?

Or does it just mean it is seen as a network device but is only compatible with stuff like DV cameras and ipods?

I'm not really familiar with firewire stuff, but he gave me his old firewire card as well because he has no use for it now, and I'm not sure if I should bother installing it if i have no peripherals to use on it..

i think it works for a network. firewire 1 is 400mbit i think, 50mbytes a second. wont be as good as gigabit but beats 10/100. all the mobos i have with firewire ports do this

sweet.. then I'll have a busy arvo ahead of me. :-)

Oh yeah, so if it does work in the end, would i just need one 6p-6p cable working like a crossover to the other pc, or and adapter of some sort?

A Standard Firewire cable should be fine, for just 2 PCs. A small network, but if one has WinXP, it can share the internet.

Yes, sharing adsl properly was what i was getting at, and fast copying of big files, because his standard ethernet has problems and cuts us out of the real net for apparently no reason whenever we use it, after a random period of time. (virussed, *snicker-snicker*, even though i just did the reainstall and forced him to put norton firewall and antivirus on there).
