Hi. I'm running a 3.2ghz p4 , 2 gigs ramm and a 9800XT with cable modem. I play quake 3, diablo 2: lord of destruction, ut2004 and mostly Counter-Strike. For the past 10 months I've had this very annoying problem in all the games that I play. I'll explain the problem by example of Counter-Strike, since I play it most. Okay. During a battle (i.e. An exchange of gun fire/grenades) in Counter-Strike my FPS drops down from 100 constant FPS to around 30-60fps and by the time the FPS goes back up to 100, I've already died of lag... except it's not really "lag" its the FPS drop causing me to have an unplayable atmosphere. I've tried talking to Alienware tech support repeatedly... probably 40 times in the past 6 months. They have no idea what the problem is. I've tried the Steam support forums for Counter-strike for several months asking the people there for help as well, but with no success. So basically I get FPS drop during battle. Sometimes after I die from the FPS drop, the game won't let my mouse or keyboard function until the next round starts. But that doesn't happen very often. Also, the other day I enabled Intel Active(R) Monitor and as soon as I alt+tabbed back into CS and played for 10 seconds after dying of FPS drop, Intel Active Monitor warned me that my processor temperatures went above average for a second, but that they went back to average after cooling down for just a few seconds. Umm. I've tried many many many clean formats and just installing CS only, no drivers or anything. Still have the same problem. I've tried 2 new hard drives, I've tried my old geforce 3 64mb and still the same prob. I'm pretty much just lost at this point in time. I'm left with the unsatisfying thought that I spent damn near $3400+ for a computer built for gaming that umm... is only worth $0 because the games won't work right. I got this computer in January '04 and it was fine. It was totally awesome. No problems at all. Then in February '04 (1 month later...) I started getting the lag. It's never been the same since then. Is there anyone here who can give me some help, please? I know a pretty good amount about computers. I'm not some C++ college graduate or anything of that sort but I know a moderate amount of stuff :-) anyway, PLEASE HELP! I'll bake you cookies!

Ok how many process do you have running in the background? Turn off any FPS displaying programs and Instant messenger clients. And look though your prcesses with crlt+alt+delete to see all of them. Also run an anti spyware program. BTW 30FPS is fine there is no lag detectable to the human eye at 30FPS.

Theres a bunch of info that you need to add to find out ill ask questions....

Judas-Smoke Intel Active Monitor warned me that my processor temperatures went above average for a second, but that they went back to average after cooling down for just a few seconds.
If its from alienware there shouldnt be any overheating in your cpu. Call them and tell them that since your not allowed to put on fans and other case mods yourself. You've talked alot about putting in new hard drives and a different video card. I though changing parts on your own kills your warranty on the machine. You might want to check on that just to be sure.
Umm. I've tried many many many clean formats and just installing CS only, no drivers or anything. Still have the same problem.

You need your drivers or else it would lag like hell. Make sure your drivers are up to date. How do you know this lag is from an fps drop? Do you have stats telling you this? Have you tryed running any benchmarks to see if your computer runs right? It may not be an fps drop. All servers have at least some ping so there will be some lag. Most games that you have mentioned have warping problems ive seen it alot myself in UT2k4. Server lag that causes players to warp around looks kinda like lag. Any problems in solo play or online only? Is everything in game bad like the animation for the gunfire how fast you move ect...

Wow Wow Wow. Everyone chill out for a second. First of all stop giving me that attitude that says "this guy is a newb he's overlooking something simple" because that's not the truth. I've had this problem for TEN MONTHS. Think about it. I've already done every little thing that each of you thinks I haven't already tried. I need something pretty technical in explaination. Don't worry about my warranty with alienware. They're the ones who recommended the video card change and hard drive change. That's not a problem. Stop thinking I'm a newb. I KNOW that this is an FPS drop because I SEE my FPS drop from 100 constant fps to 30-60 FPS for 2-3 split seconds when I go into battle and die from the FPS drop. I play on literally thousands of different servers. It doesn't matter what server I'm on I get the same problem. I can have a 30 ping, I can have a 120 ping. It doesn't matter I still get the same problem. And of course my drivers are up to date. I'm using a 4.8 catalyst right now. The reason for trying to play w/o any installs was to see if this could be a problem with somethiong other than my video card. Turns out it's obviously not my video card because I still got the FPS drop even w/o my computer having detected my video card due to a fresh format. And because I tried using my old Geforce 3 64 meg but still had the same problem. I've tried disabling all startup items and services too and still have the same problem. Also, there is lag detectable to most human eyes at 60 fps and lower. Well, for me, it's really 70 or below because that's when MY EYES see tearing sometimes. But anyway that's a totally entirely different subject that has nothing to do with my problem. Mortal Gathum: That's what I've been thinking about doing but I see no point as I've already cleaned off all my fans of a LOT of dust. I also put a regular rotating fan (for cooling my room, not for cooling a computer) right beside the opened case, It's lowered my processor zone temperature from 114 degrees to 99 degrees. So even though I've already cleaned and made the temperatures much cooler, the lag issue is STILL there. So even if there was an overheating for that ONE TIME, for 5 seconds, it still did cool back down and has never happened again.

Ok are you sure your card is not defective? I can run game at as low as 25FPS and see no diffence between that and it running at 60 or more. Your processor is more than cool enough. It may be a lag spike on your cable. Rember you got other people uing that for TV and internet. Try the omgea drivers:google: Omega drivers

Just a quick check list of simple things Make sure the AGP aperture is set to at least half the memory of the card. Check AGP is set to 8* Check fast writes is enabled. Go into your CPU setting check that thermal throttling is set to no more than 50%

I've tried setting AGP aperature at 64 and 128. It doesn't matter though that has no effect and it shouldnt anyway.

AGP is set to 8X.

I don't know how to enable fast writes I'm using catalyst 4.8 gimme some tips on how to do that?

Thermal throttling is set tfine.

Anything else?

This might sound weird but mybe its a problem with the mobo itself? Are one of the pins bent or something? It could be something else faulty with your motherboard. Thats what im betting because of problems with both graphic cards. You also might want to run a cpu stress test progarm if you havent already. Heres one that ive tired: http://users.bigpond.net.au/cpuburn/ I used it for my oc'ing but it still tests your cpu. Sorry if this sounds like one of those "omg hes a n00b" type things its just that you didnt give all the info with your first post. Its always best to asume the other guy is newbie when your trying to be helpful. And for all the other useless post/posters this is what we know: This is not virus/spyware related This is not cable related problems This is not graphic card problem Please think about that if your too lazy to read the first post.
