My uncle wants a computer for basic games, flight sims was his main game. Anyway He asked me if i was upgrading soon and if he could buy any spare hardware i might have (see sig) So im going to build him a rig using my current computer except psu and gpu so i need a new gpu and psu for his.

Ive know flight sims only have fairly basic graphics but not sure what kind of graphic card i need and just a basic psu a decent brand that will power everything.

help would be great

cheers

nvidia 9600gt should be cheap enough and still have enough plenty of power to run Lock-On, which is a fairly demanding game on maximum settings.

I recommend getting a Corsair TX 550-650 watt psu(they are great units) For a gpu, You might want to look at a Radeon 5770. Great little card that can push some descent graphics for a small price. Plus, you get dx11 features if you need them.

I vouch for the GTS 250...it's not too old, and it's a great card for not a lot of money. You can find the 1GB version for well under $100 if you look around. It's basically a redesigned 9800GTX+, with a slightly shorter PCB and only one PCIe power cable required.

As for power supplies, I've always had good luck with Antec. I'm currently using an Antec TruePower Trio 550W that's served me well for several years now.

Wow. Wow. Wow. The 5770 can handle nearly every game on 1920x1080. Apart from that, it might be a bit too expensive for 'basic' games. A card like the GTS 250 or 4850/5750 is fine. Oh yeah, PSU. The RealPower series from CoolerMaster are recommended by me. :)

Well, last time I looked, Lock On & Flight Simulator X were a bit more than basic graphically speaking...

4870's are going for less than $100 used now, you might want to check those out.

Thats what i was thinking. FSX is a pretty demanding game AFAIK.

FSX can struggle even on some pretty strong systems. Those games aren't exactly "basic" when it comes to graphics, a 5770/ 4870 and up most likely would be needed for those games. Some of the add-ons that you can get for those games will put a solid setup through its paces. Remember that most of the flightsim games aren't the most optimized in the world.

I thought FSX was more CPU-bound than GPU. So I would try push a bit more out of that Q6600 as well. But a 4870 right now would be cheap, and fast enough to drive those games at reasonable IQ settings at 1920x1080.

They're more CPU-bound, but quite inefficient with GPU's so you need all the power you can get with them.
