so, I just bought a new computer, and I have this problem with my graphics card. I have this issue when I play halo 1, and when I play fable. It will run fine, but then every about 15 seconds, it gets choppy for like 2 seconds, then goes back to running fine. I have an on board graphics card, a Geforce 6100, 256 mb card. My friend thought that because it was on board that it may have too slow of a bus speed, so I put my brothers Geforce 7200 PCI-E 256mb card in to see if that solved the problem and it did not. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 6000+, 4Gb of ram, but XP only recognizes 3gb. So I do not think that it is a power issue, so it must be something else. Any ideas?

Thank you for the help

Honestly, I don't think either of those cards are powerful enough to run Halo.

you are joking, right? also, I just found out that it did it with an online flash game. Maybe it is not my graphics card.

Well, I don't have anything special and Halo runs on my computer, as well as Fable, I've got Intel G13/15 Family Chipset on my desktop and Mobile Intel 965 Express Family Chipset on laptop, both run fine (more games and programs run better on the laptop, which is unusual, but..)

I guess get a new graphics card or don't play Halo..

As Apollo says he doesn't think that they will work, I'm quite positive they won't work. I don't have any other ideas, sorry..

hmm, I just turned down all of the graphics settings on halo, and it didn't seem to chop at all, so maybe it is a power issue

I guess so. I will probably just buy a 1gb graphics card and get it over with

Well, the 6100, along with other integrated cards, are pretty much at the bottom of the list as far as gaming goes. They also use part of your system ram as VRAM as they don't have their own memory, so your losing some RAM as well.

A quick google search seems to suggest it should run Halo 1 and other old games decently though, but i don't know at what settings. Tried updating your drivers?

I guess so. I will probably just buy a 1gb graphics card and get it over with

Don't just look at the amount of memory when you buy a card. There are many others things that are just as important like clock speeds, pipelines/shaders, memory bus width, etc...

so I put my brothers Geforce 7200 PCI-E 256mb card in to see if that solved the problem and it did not.

Did you try reinstalling the drivers when you did that? And it may sound dumb, but did you make sure you disabled the integrated card?

I have a similar problem once in a while, sometimes, my PC freezes for half a second every 2 seconds, and does this until it decides it's time to crash and restart, or I restart it manually. There is no pattern to it, and it never has happened in any games, probably unrelated, but unusual.

This is actually a very common problem. Unfortunately, there is no specific cause.

Halo has been a pain for a while,... Battlefield 2, Farcry, and a few others (The Source Engine causes problems for me). You'll just be running along, fine & dandy, then suddenly the frames will drop 50%.

Especially when there are a lot of effects going on. Physics, or Shadows, or Smoke & Fire. Bloom, or HDR are common causes.
