it can run wc3 fine but hl2 not so good. you need to up the processor to at least 2 ghz if you want to run hl2 half way ok and add a lot more ram. go to least 1gb.

I am not sure but the HL2 CPU minmum requirements may be over 850 MHZ. If you OC it will run HL2 VERY VERY slow but 512 RAM is decent. If you really want to run HL2 somewhat well, get a better CPU and mobo. Plus you can get RAM cheap now and the more you get, the better it will preform. I would go with a Intel 2.4AE which you can overclock quite well and it is not too much money.

I'd say, since it is not bogged down by Windows XP, it should be able to run HL2. HL2 does not need a 2ghz processor, but it does require a good one. I would not recommend overclocking an AMD 850mhz to 1ghz, you will most likely fry it. Those older AMDs got real hot.

I definately recommend a memory upgrade, 256mb will not play HL2 at any decent performance level. The only reason I believe it is even possible, is because of the FX5500. It ain't no ATI Radeon 9800Pro or better, but atleast it has 128mb of RAM.

I played KOTOR on a Pentium III 600mhz, with a Geforce FX 5600XT. Admittedly, it ran slow (17fps) when there was a lot of activity, but that was only in a few parts of the game.

you can build a decent gaming computer for pretty cheap if that's an option.

hmmmmm, if the mobo does not turn on or no lights are on it is probably ruined. You can get a cheap mobo on ebay if you really want this old PC to run...

If it was me, I'd save and shell out for a new comp...the one you originally described won't pump out HL2. My comp hardly does on lowest settings. Dell Dimension 4450 P4 2.0 512KB cache (not sure if it's L1 or L2) PC2100 256MB DiMM (and) PC2700 512MB DiMM (first operated at 133mhz, second at 166mhz :( ) BFG Tech nVidia GeForce FX5200 256MB card Sound Blaster 24-bit cheapo semi-piece of crap sound card Maxtor 120GB 7,200RPM HDD Memorex Dual Layer burner...blah blah blah Anyhow, my computer lags on Medal of Honor Spearhead, yet plays CoD with better FPS. I keep all settings on the lowest, and barely get 40 FPS if I'm very lucky (no other players in server, etc...) Comp crashed when I switched settings to medium. That'll change when I get my new comp (see other thread :p) Good luck!

Pfft, I ran (in the past, few months ago, upgraded drastically since these days) the DEMO for HL2 on high with a 900mhz AMD CPU, and 512PC133 ram, FX5600 Ultra 128, no issues at all. The game ran quite smooth. These "older" generation FX cards are incredibly versatile, contrary to what any reviewer can say. I'd say just give it a try. If not, ah well. Save teh game till you can upgrade.
