Alright here's my problem. Just today, i was playing around with hl2's hammer making a map. Ran into a couple errors, and went to Steam's tech support. It told me to download a new version of Direct X, so I did, I think it was 9.0c or something along those lines. So I did this, then my pc had to restart. Well i went to get a drink, and come back to find a blank black screen with a white underscore, ( _ ), flashing in the top left hand corner of the screen. Well i manually shut it off, and turn it back on. It works fine for a little while. So I got back into hammer, and load a hl2 map. Well the game freezes and totally locks up my system (sounds like graphics card or Ram now), and its never done this before. Well i shutdown, and and restart. It gets past the first loading screen (where you can press f2 to go into boot up menu), and it goes to the same flashing underscore, blank screen. At this point I'm scared that my hard drive was failing. So restart it 8 more times, and sure enough it was stuck like that. Well at a desperate last resort, I pull apart my pc, and have a look around inside. I took out the hard drive, and let it sit, it felt REALLY hot to the touch. Then I blow the fan filter out, because of dust, and fan out the rest of the pc, to get rid of all the dust. Now I let it sit, plug the hard drive back in, piece the PC back together, wires and all, and start it up. It starts up fine. Now right now I'm completely confused as to what I did to fix it, but Im guessing it's temporary, and I need to act fast. I'm thinking about a system restore to about a week ago, to make sure I get rid of the direct X just in case, and any other spyware/drivers that I installed. I don't want to do this however, because I risk it restarting and going back into the black screen. It would be great if anyone could help me out, this would be the 2nd hard drive failure, and it wouldn't be under any warranty. So if I want a pc for the next year or so, I need this fixed. Thanks in advance.

How old is the harddrive? What type is it (SATA etc.). I suggest getting a backup USB harddrive and saving everything on there you dont want to lose. Chances are, like you said, when you downloaded DirectX9.0c, some virus or spyware may have snuck on for the ride. Hasnt happened to me though.

If the harddrive is 2 years old or more, you need a new one. Simple as that.

Also, another great thing to do would be to download SeaTools, burn it to a CD and reboot your computer, booting off of said CD; run the generic diagnostic (S.M.A.R.T., Quick and Full diagnostics). This test will tell you if your drive has any bad sectors, etc. Quite a useful tool that I run on every system that comes in to my place of work.
