Do you have SP1 or SP2? Automatic update was one of the things that microsoft revamped with the release of SP2.

It may be a Virus. One that is afraid of being fixed, via automatic updates.

Then Microsoft just launched a new product. "Microsoft Update", it may have removed the item. I don't know for sure. I'm holding back, to see what the Magazines, Slashdotter's, conspiracy theorists, and Experts elsewhere say about it. One can never be too carefull.

So check your PC for viruses, or Update Windows. Its your call.

Slashdot "/." is a Geek Site www.slashdot.org. "News for Nerds, Stuff that matters". The name means hidden, to Unix, and Linux users. In *Nix you hide a folder, by adding a dot to the beginning of the name. So "/." is hidden from most people, except Geeks. Everything else should be self explanatory.

Well it looks like the windows update site (windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) doesn't work for me, it just goes and weird and I have to press ctrl alt delete and end it.

Sounds alot like a virus. Download AVG free edition if you don't already have a virus program. Run the scan and if it doesn't detect anything... then... well, reinstall windows?

That would not affect Windows Update.

You could install SP2 and that may bring it back.
