is this something specific to a version of XP like home, cause i use Pro and have never had to activate.

I think you can activate Home 5 times, and Pro is unlimited. Either way, you're fine.

Same as. I've had this computer from about 2002 and format like.. every month. I use the sys. restore disk I got with it. I've had no problems (well, not with activation) as of yet.

You only need to activate again if there is a major hardware change in the system (or, it seems, if your computer thinks there is a major hardware change). It isn't specific to Home or Pro. With either, if you reformat without changing your hardware, you won't need to reactivate.
