Keep in mind that there's a very strong chance that with the new mobo, you'll need to replace the ram.

And also keep in mind that the amount of ram that you have is what's holding your computer back the most at the moment, not your processor.

Some Lazy Dr;3396122Screw all these people who recommend the best, they aren't spending the money. The best is expensive. Get something more modest.

" 2.6 ghz -p4 256 sdram 80gb 5000 rpm cd drive/dvd drive from dead computer :P Onboard video that has trouble playing videos xD"

Hmm, I'd upgrade the RAM to a gigabyte. That is, if you had PCI-Express.

Get a new motherboard for $100 or less, a processor for $100 or less, RAM for $100 or less and a graphics card for $100 or less. Make sure it's PCI-Express and 64-bit. Doesn't matter if it's 939 or AM2 or whatever the hell the Intel sockets are. AMD, get something with a 512kb or greater (L2), Intel I'd go 1MB L2 or greater.

Are you kdding me?

Well his current board will only take DDR2 so I'm assuming he has some already, and as long as it's DDR2-533 or above he'll be fine with a C2D.
