I just thought of this, and it would be cool if someone who knows about cars and computers could give me some feedback on this. my idea is to hook up an automotive air filter to my computers fans using some kind of piping, PVC maybe but something lighter would be better. the kind of air filter id use would be the circular kind meant for carbureted V8s. the only thing id be worried about, which is why i want to hear from someone who knows about car and computers, is that the fans might not be powerfull enough to suck air through this kind of filter. did a quick paint pic, the setup would look something like this:

another idea might be to put a fan somewhere inside the pipes, to help force more air down through the filter. I thought of this just now and i thought id post it, so good idea or not?

I guess it's a good idea, but it'd probably be more for a show/mod showoff PC. I don't think it'd be practical for the average user's PC. And yes, you're correct in guessing that the fans aren't strong enough to pull air through the filter. The fans on the back of a computer are barely able to keep a piece of paper stuck to them :/

Now, tweak em a little and get em running faster, and you're golden. The only problem with faster fans (besides being more prone to failing) is the noise factor.

There are fans desaigned for computer cases that are very powerful, but forcing them to suck through an air filter defies the point.

Not if you want clean air inside your case.:) @ OP:An ebmpabst 4312 or something like that should do the trick. It draws 5W and is pretty loud, but the filter might muffle it. Tried mine as a front intake in my P-180,and it sucked the door shut from a half way open position.

You mean a Papst 4312? The fans I was thinking of were the Vantec Tornado, and they're considerably more powerful (and louder) than that papst fan. Nothing is going to muffle one of those; I once had a pair in my PC and you could hear them through the floor.

Papst has changed name to ebmpapst,at least it says so on my one. Still the same fan, though.:) 170 cubic meters an hour while freeblowning should leave enough volume when filtered.

1) It's a stupid idea. 2) It will kill airflow. 3) Even with a Tornado. 4) Which will make your computer sound like a taxiing jet liner. 5) It will also send your fans to an early grave.

Ya....but it'd be really funny...just saying. Also noise sucks. When i build my pc i didnt even think about noise, now when i am trying to sleep it gets really really annoying.
