The other day I bought a couple of iMacs cheaply at an auction. I bought about 5 pretty clean looking iMacs (The blue-green and white kind) and an Apple laser printer and monitor for $10 total. So far 3 of them worked great, but one of them I hooked up and when I turned it on I never got the Apple startup sound. All of them had no OS on them and I have OS 9.2 and I've been installing it on the others just fine. When I put the disc in this one it just sits there flashing the folder icon with a question mark and the little frowny face on the other one back and forth (The others do this for a few seconds then show up with the smiling mac face and start up off the disc). The others found the disc but this one didn't for some reason and I took it apart and made sure all the stuff was connected and it was. I have no clue what is wrong with it, so does anyone here have any ideas what I can do to fix it? Also, I've got one other one that it sounds almost like the disc drive is speeding up and slowing down a bunch but never winding up like it is reading it. I'm thinking it may have a bad CD drive so I may just swap from the other one that won't read the OS disc, but I'd like to see if I can get it fixed first before I tear both of them apart again (Pesky little things to work on). It made a bootup sound though, so does anyone have any idea what else might be wrong if not the CD drive? On a sidenote, does anyone how well the little IR panel on the front of the iMacs work? What exactly do you use them for? Only one of mine has this and I thought it might have been a DVD drive or something. EDIT: Just like to OT mention to those who like Office Space, I had the opportunity to buy a table full of printers like the kind in my avy that can say PC LOAD LETTER. Hehe I don't think anyone else thought of that at the auction, but they were pretty dirty and I don't need them.

If memory serves the IR panel allows it to network with compatible machines over a (painfully slow) IR connection. It's pointless and completely obsolete (it was removed from the later iMacs, so that must be a fairly early one), so forget about it.
