Internet Forum Softwares Comparison

Hello there :)

I am writing this to help future forum owners. There's tons of forum softwares out there and as a new website owner, it's not always easy to pick the good one.

I am doing this to help. Please do not complain.. Suggest! So here we go.

phpBB

Cost : Free Developer : phpBB Group Official website : phpBB • Creating Communities Worldwide Latest Version and Download :

How do I get it? You can either install if on your own domain following this guide for phpBB2 or this one for phpBB3. Before downloading, make sure you meet the Requirements. Free Providers : There's many free phpBB forums providers. I tried these 3 and they aren't bad. Good support and good pre-installed mod.

More Informations : phpBB is great for all new forums developer. You can familiarize yourself with the basic features and the Admin control panel with a free forum and then install the full customizable version if you like it. Some basic codding skills are required if you want to enjoy the full version because the default version is kinda empty and you'll have to install some mods. Hopefully, there's tons of mods and templates out for phpBB2 and some for phpBB3.. mainly on these site : phpBB Official Website, phpBB Hacks.

If you have any questions about phpBB don't hesitate to ask. I am pretty familiar with phpBB and can certainly give basic support.

Demo:*Test :: Index Login: admin Password : admin

Invision Power Board

Cost :

  • Standard License - 150$
  • Business License - 300$

More info..Developer : Invision Power Services Inc. Official website : Invision Power Services :: Corporate :: Homepage Latest Version and Download :

How do I get it? Well since it's not a free forum software, you'll have to pay for the full version. At that price you'll get full support for the installation ;) However, there's some free Invision Board providers. They are stuck at V2.1 though and probably won't ever provide free V2.2 forums.

More Informations : This is a great forum software. The admin control panel is really complete and it's much customizable. There's not lot of mods though. It is also great that some sites are providing a free version of Invision Board V2.1. This version is really complete and probably close to the 2.2 or 2.3 version (Haven't try the full version though so I'm not sure.) Great software.

Demo*:test Login: admin Password: admin

vBulletin

Cost :

  • Owned License - 160$
  • Leased License (one year) - 85$

Developer : Jelsoft Enterprises Official website : https://www.vbulletin.com/ Latest Version and Download : 3.6.8 - No free download and No free providers. How do I get it? You either pay for the license of try the 24 hours demo at : vBulletin® - Admin Control Panel Demo More Informations : vBulletin is really complete. The admin control panel is really really complete. However, it might be a little complicated for new forum owners (but normally you don't start with vBulletin since it's expensive and you don't always know if your community will grow or not). There's tons of useful features not included in others forum softwares. It's also the only forum software I've tried with a complete Moderator control panel (there's few other forums softwares with good ModCP but not as complete as this one). Really easy to manage and good for big communities. You'll find tons of mods and styles at : vBulletin.org Forum - The Official vBulletin Resource!

SMF : Simple Machines Forum

Cost : Free Developer : Simple Machines Official website : Home of SMF: Free PHP and MySQL forum software Latest Version and Download :

How do I get it? If you have your own website, you can download and install the package easily using the download link I provided. Again, make sure you meet the Requirements. There's also few free SMF providers. Here's a little list :

More Informations : I haven't tried SMF enough to write a description. I have been member on few forums based on SMF but never admin or moderator. Here's the official features list. Demo* : http://crissitest.smfforfree3.com Login : admin Password : admin

Oh that was long! I am done for now. If you have any comment please post. Feedback is always appreciated. If you have specific knowledge into a forum software, PM me the infos.

______________ *I added few demo boards so you can try the software and especially the admin control panel. Everybody is welcome to test them but please, do not close them or f**k with them or I'll simply remove them. Feel free to create new forums and such things. Enjoy!

I just want to mention that the prices listed for vbulletin are annual costs.

Invisions owned license is a lifetime purchase

PHPBB is good. I'm using it, and I also tested PHPBB3. It has a lot more features and looks really professional.

Does it still use session hashes? If so, that's the biggest complaint against it because session hashes are very unsecure.

it was using them the last time i used PHPBB3. I used Beta 3 i think, and current version is RC7.

It can be modified to hide them i think.

Nice writeup! Pretty concise and sounds about right. I'd also suggest you incorporate a section on Vanilla, which is a very nice open source alternative along with PHPBB.

What's the difference between vBulletin (Owned License) (160$) and the vBulletin (Leased License) (80$) ??

Yea phpBB3 is really complete. First version of phpBB with an user control panel similar to vBulletin one with thread submissions and things.

*adds vanilla to list* I'll look into that. I also posted this thread on another forum I moderate so I can add content from time to time. Since I am not a moderator of this forum I can't do it here but next time I make a big upgrade I'll send to to a super mod.

Thanks for the feedbacks all :)

The owned vBulletin Forum license allows you to run the software on your site indefinitely. Along with this license, you receive one year of free updates. Beyond the first year you have to pay $30 to obtain updates for an additional year.

The leased vBulletin Forum license allows you to use the software on your site for 1 year and gives you access to product updates for that year. After 1 year, you must renew your license or remove the software from your site.

Personally whenever I have wanted a forum for anything I have always gone with PHPBB.
