Any major electronics retailer such as Best Buy, Circuit City, or Radio Shack should have them. I have never been to NYC, but my guess is they have at least one of each. There should also be an Apple Store somewhere in the city. You could check online and I am sure you could find out where and how many of each store is there. Like I said in an earlier post, I doubt there are many stores still selling the older models. The G4 iPod has been out since July of 2004. No retailer that even sells a small number of iPods should still have any G3 in stock almost a full year later.

iPods are pretty tough. Mine has been through quite a bit and still works. The front has a clear enamel coating though that scratches pretty easily. If you are afraid of scratches and want your iPod to look new longer, you might want to look into buying a case for it. Personally, I don't care how it looks so long as it works. I do keep it in a paper bag when using it at work with my Belkin TuneCastII though, because otherwise it probably would be ruined there. On an added note, the TuneCastII has to have been one of the best accessories I have purchased for my iPod. The sound quality is pretty good (although there is a bit of background static sometimes) and it broadcasts in stereo, unlike a couple of the other FM transmitters available. I use it all the time in the car and at work, and actually listen to it more that way than through headphones. Of course, thats partially because I am a workaholic during the summer and work 50+ hours a week. Much <3 for overtime pay!

oh, my mum said she would order this thing called IPODArmour, its made my some brand beginning with M, wit its an aluminium case, that holds the ipod. you cannot see the screen, or use the click wheel when its in the case, but it protects it. its layered with foam inside too. the top flips open and then you can use the screen and wheel. it looks pretty good, and theres gaps for headphones and USB. it looks pretty cool, but its around £35, i think thats like $55 or something.

I carry my iPod around in my pocket, so I opted not to get a case for it. Too much bulk would make it uncomfortable to carry around. A few scratches don't bother me as long as it still works.
