http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/default.mspx (Click the "Details" button to see prices at bottom of the pages). $400 for Ultimate and $200 for Home Basic?! What do they we're made of, money?! I'd have thought at least $100 for basic.... the real kicker is that Basic doesn't even come with the Aero theme, jeez... guess I'm waiting a while...

Well, if you play games on PC your going to need to buy it. In the future, I don't think the games made for Vista couldn't take XP. Prob would crash your computer. :P

Oh well, I still think it's a rip off. I'll wait till the price goes down. :)

Do you guys honestly believe that game companies are gonna stop using DX9 for good in 6 months? No, their not that stupid because they know not that many people are going to get Vista. UT2007 and Quake Wars are still only going to use DX9 -_-. Even if they start porting games out to be DX10 they still probably make it able to run on DX9. You wont be seeing many games that are going to be DX10 only for a good year, probably more. Only a select few will be DX10 only, and the only ones I know of is Halo 2, which is stupid, for that game can run on a Xbox...

If I may point something out, those prices are no different to XP. In fact, given that XP is going on for 6 years old and is now (a little bit) cheaper than when it came out, and that this thing called inflation happens over time; Vista is probably a fair bit cheaper than it's equivalent version of XP was/is.

Yes, things like Vista Ultimate are bloody expensive, but are you seriously going to complain that they've added features and want to sell it for more money than the normal versions? Ever bought a special edition DVD or game? I know I have. Got Quake 4 Special Edition sitting right in front of me and a Special Edition film that a mate lent to me. How many people whine about that? Yeah...it may only cost you a few extra pounds or dollars or whatever, but a film is only 2 hours of entertainment. An OS is probably gonna last you around 5 years. Do the maths peeps.

This moaning about Windows prices is starting to irritate me. It happens every time Microsoft releases a new OS. And yes, they charge money for it. A lot of money. And yes, many people think it's far too much. So what?! If you don't like it go install Linux. But the thing is, you DO like it; you just don't like the pricing. Well tough, it's simple supply and demand lads, if you want to change it then don't buy it. Otherwise start saving your pennies (or cents, I suppose). Whining about it isn't going to change anything because all of you WILL buy it eventually and Bill will get his money.

(And like...sorry mods, had to be said IMO)

Indeed^.

I don't recall OS prices in the past being all that different from those Vista prices above.

Easy on the profanities, Arch. The Melee has been closed for a long time.
