:deal: Ok ive been reading around about satellite internet connections and online gaming, i will be receiving my satellite tommorow since all that is avaliable in my area is Dial up and Satellite. Most people have said the problem with Satellite is the upload rate. The one i will be getting is 1.5mbps Up/Down, Plus i don't get the 9 second lag time deal. Once your connected it shouldn't have any lag time correct?

No, You will still get that 9 second delay, you have to fo from the computer to a tranmitter to a satelie back donw to your ISP then into the internt. With a 9000ms ping(9 second lag) you wont be able to play anything online other than turn based games.

Ping times have always plagued satellite connections, due to the time it takes to beam data to and from the satellite. Because of this, it isn't uncommon to use the satellite to download while sending upstream data out over a phone line via a standard modem. I don't know if this is still the case, but it used to make it such that satellite wasn't much good for anything other than downloading large files.

*ahem* I'll be a geeky 'un and show you the maths: Satellite Dishes receive radio signals from Space Satellites orbiting the Earth. Most of the Internet Satellite Networks use Geostationary satellites, which are satellites roughtly 36,000 Km above the Earth. Geostationary satellites have the exact same orbit time as Earth (~24 hours), so they hover over the same point on Earth all the time. There are usually 2-3 Geostationary Satellites detectable from every point on Earth (except the poles). Moving on... radio signals travel at the speed of light, because they are electromagnetic. The speed of light is roughly 3x10^8 meters per second. We can use the equation t = D / v to work out the time because time is equal to to distance devided by velocity. So, t = 36,000,000 m/s / 3^8 m/s t = 0.12 seconds each way That means the total travel time from the ISP to you is ~0.24 seconds, plus the speed of the ISP server and the remote server. That can make the latency a few seconds at least. That is all. Class dismissed.

Don't be so negative to him. He was saying it was not uncommon for people to do such a thing. He wasn't saying that you did that, or suggesting that you do that. Remember that people volunteer to post - they aren't obliged to help you at all. Have some respect.

satellite and gaming is an oxymoron. 56k is faster. Sat is better if all you plan on doing is up/downloading, but it ends there.

I feel for you. I have been on 56k. All we are telling you is Sat is horrible for gaming. What help are you looking for exactly? Good for downloading porn though :)
